MR vs BWR vs BWP Plywood: Which Grade Goes Where?

MR, BWR or BWP? What plywood grades mean under IS 303 and IS 710, which grade each part of your kitchen and wardrobes needs, and how to check a sheet.

Back to Blog

Your kitchen and wardrobes are mostly plywood boxes, called the carcass, with shutters and hardware fixed to them. Shutters can be replaced and hinges can be changed. A carcass that has swollen from water is a much bigger repair. That's why the plywood grade on your quote is worth understanding.

In short: MR grade suits dry furniture such as bedroom wardrobes and study units. BWR handles humidity and the occasional splash, so it's a sensible minimum for kitchen cabinets. BWP is for places that actually get wet, like the sink base, bathroom vanities and utility areas. Whatever the grade, check the ISI mark and licence number printed on the sheet.

What MR, BWR and BWP stand for

The three common grades differ mainly in the adhesive (resin) that bonds the wood layers together, and in how much water that bond can take.

Grade Full form Resin used Indian Standard Handles Typical use
MR Moisture Resistant Urea formaldehyde IS 303 Humid air, not water Bedroom wardrobes, TV units, study tables in dry rooms
BWR Boiling Water Resistant Phenolic resin IS 303 Humidity and occasional water contact Kitchen cabinets away from the sink, shoe racks, wardrobes on damp walls
BWP Boiling Water Proof Phenolic resin IS 303 (BWP grade) or IS 710 (marine) Regular water exposure Sink base, bathroom vanities, utility and balcony storage

What changed in 2024

For years, IS 303 (general-purpose plywood) covered MR and BWR, while "BWP" was mostly sold as marine plywood under IS 710. In 2024 the Bureau of Indian Standards amended IS 303 to add a BWP grade, partly because buyers were confusing interior BWP plywood with marine plywood.

So a sheet marked "BWP" today may be either:

  • IS 303, BWP grade: general-purpose plywood with boiling-water-proof bonding, meant for interiors; or
  • IS 710, marine plywood: a separate standard with stricter requirements, originally meant for marine conditions.

Both are made for wet areas. The point is to know which one your quote specifies, and to see that standard printed on the sheets that arrive.

Which grade for which part of your home

This is a sensible default for most flats in Delhi NCR. Humid monsoon months, kitchens with daily water use, and bathrooms that share a wall with bedrooms are what push some areas up a grade.

Area Recommended grade Why
Kitchen sink base and dishwasher unit BWP Leaks and spills happen here first
Other kitchen base and wall units BWR at least; BWP if the budget allows Steam, wiping and splashes, but not standing water
Bathroom vanity BWP Constant moisture
Utility, balcony or wash-area storage BWP Water and outdoor humidity
Bedroom wardrobes in dry rooms MR is acceptable No water contact
Wardrobes on an external wall or one shared with a bathroom BWR Damp walls can affect the back of the unit
Shoe rack near the main door BWR Wet footwear in the monsoon
TV unit, study table, bed storage MR Dry use

Using BWP everywhere is rarely necessary. Each step up costs more, and the money is often better spent on hardware or on sealing the board properly (see below).

The grade isn't the whole story

A good grade can still fail if the board is left exposed. Ask about these too:

  • Edge banding on every exposed edge. Water gets in through raw edges far more easily than through laminated faces. Edges near the sink and on the bottom of base units matter most.
  • Laminate on both faces. A balancing laminate on the inner face helps keep panels flat and sealed.
  • Thickness. Carcass panels are commonly 18–19 mm. If a quote says only "plywood", ask for the thickness of each part.
  • Sink area sealing and plumbing. A BWP sink base still needs a properly sealed sink and leak-free plumbing. The grade protects the wood; it doesn't fix a dripping trap.
  • Ventilation. Closed units with no airflow trap moisture, especially in a kitchen that sees steam every day.

How to check the plywood you're getting

  1. Ask for the grade, standard and thickness in your quote, item by item. For example: "Kitchen sink base: 18 mm BWP, IS 710". A line that just says "plywood" leaves room for substitution.
  2. Look for the ISI mark on each sheet. Genuine ISI-marked plywood carries the IS number, the grade and a BIS licence number (CM/L-…).
  3. Verify the licence. The Bureau of Indian Standards' BIS Care app has a "Verify Licence Details" option. Enter the CM/L number to see the licence holder, the standard and whether the licence is active. BIS has seized plywood carrying expired and fake ISI licence numbers, so this check is worth a minute.
  4. Check sheets on delivery, before they're cut. Once a sheet is cut, the printed mark may be gone.

Frequently asked questions

Is BWR good enough for a kitchen?

For cabinets away from the sink, BWR is a reasonable minimum. For the sink base, and any unit that houses a dishwasher or water purifier, use BWP.

Is BWP the same as marine plywood?

Not necessarily. Since the 2024 amendment, IS 303 includes a BWP grade for general use, while marine plywood is made to IS 710, a separate standard. Check which standard is printed on the sheet.

Can I use MR plywood for wardrobes?

In a dry bedroom, yes. If the wardrobe sits against an external wall or a wall shared with a bathroom, BWR is the safer choice.

Should shutters also be plywood?

Not always. Shutters are often made of other boards, such as MDF or HDHMR, depending on the finish. The water-resistance question matters most for the carcass, especially in the kitchen.
